“瘟神”，god of plague，中国古代神话中专以瘟疫害人的鬼神，现在比方无恶不作、面目可憎的人或邪恶势力。人们常用此来表达或人不吉祥，会给他人带来灾祸。瘟[wēn]，指流行性急性传染病：瘟疫、瘟病（pest; pestilence; plague）。神[shén]，表明神灵、神怪（god; deity; divinity）。
“送瘟神”是一个中国传统习俗。旧时人们对发作的瘟疫和疾病不能做出合理的解说，以为瘟疫是瘟神降灾于人世而导致的，故除了平常祭祀瘟神（offer sacrifices to the god of plague）之外，过年时还要团体送瘟神（send away the god of plague），以请求来年家人健康安全。现在，这个俗话多用来比方“get rid of something or somebody undesirable”。
